In this month of May our club is still very active. Ten club members will be attending the Soroptimist Desert Coast Region Spring Conference is coming up soon, May 19-21, including our own Lisa Moore, Region Secretary, and Max Levaren, District III Secretary.
We will be donating towards the Mother’s Day Celebration that SDYS is giving to honor the girls in the STARS program who are mothers. We also have a Bracelet Making Party on May 22 at the East County Chamber. It’s fun with a purpose, being a combination membership event/service project.
We just finished up our service project delivering 50 tea cup sets and journals to the ladies at National Crossroads. I had the great pleasure of accompanying Linda Newell to hear The Etiquette Lady, Elaine Swann, speak to the ladies of NC about etiquette for job interviews. This was no high and mighty debutante talking proper manners, this is a real down to earth woman with a lot of real life practical advice. She shared her personal struggles being a single teen mother who had to drop out of school to give birth, so the women could relate to her. Her presentation was simple, yet thorough, and very entertaining, completely engaging the women’s attention the whole time. But she really got their attention at the end when she told them she was on a Fox TV Show, Kicking and Screaming. They squealed, “That’s YOU?” She was so sweet, staying longer to let everyone get their pictures taken with her.
The women will be organizing and giving a special tea later in May for some VIPs, including the mayor, their district assemblymember, and other local dignitaries. For this event they will be using the teacup sets our club donated.
From their FaceBook Page: National Crossroads (formerly CMI) has been assisting women in the community for almost 30 years. National Crossroads provides free room and board to newly paroled women with no available resources and to parolees who seek a positive change to their situation.
