What we doThe focus of Soroptimist is to improve the lives of women and girls. The members of Soroptimist International of La Mesa further this goal through a variety of hands-on service projects. From one-day events, to long-term involvement, every member finds a way to help women and girls that suits her personality, talents and schedule. East County Family Justice CenterOur newest long-term project is a partnership with the East County Family Justice Center. Prior to the grand opening in December 2008, SI La Mesa members spend many hours decorating the interior to provide a calming environment for women and children seeking domestic violence services. Located in a converted house in downtown El Cajon, SI La Mesa members provided furniture and decorative items for the family room, including a play area and flat screen television; kitchen and dining/meeting room; two interview rooms and even the restrooms. Modeled after the landmark San Diego Family Justice Center, the new center will house access to over 25 different agencies that provide services to domestic violence survivors. The East County Family Justice Center will be the first in the nation to provide domestic violence prevention programs and services. Naval Consolidated Brig-New BeginningsSI La Mesa members are also participating in a pilot program in partnership with the Naval Consolidated Brig at Miramar. As part of the New Beginnings program, Soroptimists mentor women who are serving a sentence at the Brig. Each member is matched with an inmate to provide her with emotional support and guidance throughout her incarceration. This new program supplements the resume writing and interviewing workshops we've been providing at the Brig for the past several years. SI La Mesa Service Brigade
La Mesa Soroptimists take part in smaller service projects around the county through our award winning Service Brigade, which provides volunteers to established events such as Race for the Cure, Special Olympics and the Iron Girl Competition. Members are always on the lookout for local volunteer opportunities where we can lend a hand. To recommend a volunteer opportunity, please contact our Service Brigade coordinator. |
